natural beauty at the heart of the southdowns national park. petersfield, buriton, and sheet collectively made up the area of mapledurham, which is mentioned in the domesday book. bronze age and iron age burial mounds are still to be found on the heath which is a 69 acre area of grass and heathland set around a 22 acre pond and is considered by many residents and visitors to be the jewel in petersfield’s crown. food and shopping at the centre of the town is the square, which is surrounded by shops, bars and various facilities. on the square stands one of the most recognised statues of william iii. many independent shops and places to eat exist down the high street, along chapel street, and into lavant street, as well as along dragon street, which is part of the old a3. heath lake one of the many attractions of this town, is the very large and beautiful ‘pond’ which is also known as heath lake. this is an idyllic spot for a visit any time of the year, with boats to hire during the summer months, usually from easter onwards, walks around the lake, and refreshments at the plump duck. travelling to petersfield petersfield has easy access by means of the a3 and a272, and is invited to a special prize giving evening at the rose room, festival hall, on thursday 4th october 2018, the event will be hosted by the town mayor and petersfield in bloom’s president and tv gardening expert pippa greenwood, will present the trophies and certificates. refreshments will also be served afterwards. entries range from most unusual container to best retail frontage. the entry
